Some systems cannot afford to wait for hours
When the ERP server stops, shipments stop. When the application running the production line goes down, so does the line. For these systems, a nightly backup is not enough: restoring from backup takes hours, and orders entered since the last backup are lost. What is needed is an always up-to-date copy of the source standing by.
Carbonite’s business continuity products are now offered under the OpenText umbrella with new names: OpenText Availability (formerly Carbonite Availability) provides real-time replication and failover, while OpenText Migrate (formerly Carbonite Migrate) is a server migration solution that keeps downtime to a minimum.
What do OpenText Availability and Migrate do?
Copies changes instantly
Availability transfers changes on the source server to a second target at byte level, continuously and asynchronously. Files, applications, or the entire server including system settings can be replicated. Your recovery point is only moments behind the production environment.
Fails over automatically
The target server continuously checks whether the source is running. If the source stops responding, failover begins, DNS records are updated and users are redirected to the target server. Once the problem is resolved, operations fail back to the primary server.
Supports every environment
It works with Windows Server and common Linux distributions. Source and target can be physical, virtual or cloud; differences in hypervisor and hardware are no obstacle. Replication traffic is encrypted and compressed, and bandwidth can be throttled during peak hours.
Tests without stopping the live system
Failover can be rehearsed without affecting the production environment. You see that your disaster recovery plan works in advance, not in the middle of a crisis.
Migrates servers without disruption
Using the same replication technology, Migrate moves a server, together with its operating system, applications and permissions, to new hardware, another virtualisation platform or the cloud. The cutover takes minutes, and if a problem arises you can quickly switch back to the source.
OpenText Availability with Unna
Not every system needs replication. We recommend selecting the few systems whose downtime cannot be measured in hours and protecting the rest with good backup.
- We listen first. Together we determine how long each system can be down and how much data loss it can tolerate.
- We plan together. We design the target location, line capacity and failover scenario.
- We install and test. We start replication and carry out the first failover rehearsal with you.
- We stay by your side. We monitor replication status and keep the plan up to date with regular rehearsals.
Part of the whole
- On the disaster recovery page, we explain when replication is needed.
- If image-based backup and fast boot from backup are sufficient, StorageCraft ShadowProtect is a more economical route.
- Replication does not replace backup; an accidental deletion is replicated instantly too. With Veeam, we also keep historical copies separately.
- You can use our data centre infrastructure for the target server.
- With FortiGate, we build a secure, redundant replication link between the two locations.
Frequently asked questions
What happened to Carbonite Recover?
Carbonite Recover no longer appears as a separate product in OpenText’s current enterprise product list. We meet the same need with Availability by setting up a target server at a second location, for example in a data centre.
Does replication slow down the primary server?
Because only changed bytes are transferred, the load is low. We measure line capacity at the planning stage and set a bandwidth limit if necessary.
