A backup is only as valuable as your ability to restore from it
Many businesses have backups, but no tested recovery plan. What is more, in ransomware attacks the first target is often the backups themselves. A backup that can be deleted or encrypted is of no use when you need it.
Veeam is data protection software that backs up and restores virtual, physical and cloud workloads from a single platform. It is one of the most widely used solutions for virtual machine backup in VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.
What does Veeam do?
Backs up all workloads from one place
VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, physical Windows and Linux servers, file shares, and workloads on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud are protected under the same management. There is a separate Veeam product for Microsoft 365 data.
Makes backups immutable
With immutable storage, backups cannot be deleted or overwritten for a set period. Even if an attacker gets into your network, they cannot touch your backups.
Recovers quickly
With Instant Recovery, a virtual machine can be run again directly from the backup file. It is also possible to recover a single file, folder or application item without restoring the whole system.
Proves the backup works
SureBackup automatically boots and tests backups in an isolated environment. You find out whether a backup works in advance, not in the middle of a crisis.
Moves a copy off site
The 3-2-1-1-0 rule recommended by Veeam: at least three copies, on two different types of storage, one copy at a different location, one copy offline or immutable, and zero verification errors. We complete this rule by sending a copy of the backups to cloud storage.
Veeam with Unna
A backup plan starts not with software but with two questions: How long can this system be down at most? How much data loss can you tolerate at most? Everything we build is shaped by these two answers.
- We listen first. We rank your systems by importance and agree for each the acceptable downtime (RTO) and data loss (RPO).
- We plan together. We design the backup frequency, retention periods and where the local and off-site copies will be kept.
- We install and test. After installation, we carry out a real restore. We never hand over an untested backup.
- We stay by your side. We monitor failed jobs, run periodic restore tests and keep track of storage capacity for you.
Part of the whole
- Veeam is the virtual server-focused part of our backup offering. In VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox virtualisation projects, we design the backup architecture together from the very start.
- In computer-heavy and mixed environments, Acronis Cyber Protect, which combines backup and security in the same agent, may be a better fit; we make the choice together.
- UnnaBulut provides a target for the off-site copy of your backups.
- With disaster recovery, we build a faster way back than backup for your most critical systems.
- By also archiving your email with MailStore, we cover the area that server backups do not.
- FortiGate and endpoint security try to prevent attacks. Veeam secures the way back when they cannot be prevented.
Frequently asked questions
Is one backup a day enough?
It depends on the system. For an accounting database, even a few hours of data loss is unacceptable, whereas a daily backup may be enough for an archive server. We set the frequency according to each system’s data loss target.
Are our backups protected against ransomware?
Immutable storage, copies isolated from the network and separate credentials for the backup system significantly reduce the risk. No single method is enough on its own; that is why we build protection in layers.
Do VMware licensing changes affect Veeam backups?
Veeam continues to support VMware vSphere environments. If you are considering changing your virtualisation platform, Veeam provides a portable backup structure between the two platforms during the migration.
