When a server goes down, minutes matter, not hours

The accounting server’s disk has failed. There is a backup, but sourcing a new disk, rebuilding the system from scratch and then restoring the data can take a whole working day. For small and medium-sized businesses, a continuously running copy at a second site is often beyond the budget. What closes the gap is being able to get the backup itself up and running.

StorageCraft’s backup technology is now developed by Arcserve. Arcserve ShadowProtect is data protection software that takes image-based backups of Windows and Linux systems and enables fast recovery from those backups.

What does ShadowProtect do?

Backs up the entire system

It takes a disk image of physical and virtual Windows and Linux systems: the operating system, applications, settings and data together. Frequent incremental backups can also run during business hours, narrowing the window of data loss.

Turns a backup into a virtual machine instantly

VirtualBoot boots the backup image directly as a virtual machine. While the failed server is being repaired, users carry on working on the system running from the backup. A single file, a volume or the whole system can also be restored separately.

Moves to different hardware

A backup can be restored physical-to-virtual, virtual-to-physical or to different hardware. Moving an old server to a new one is done the same way. For Microsoft Hyper-V environments, host-level backup is offered alongside agent-based backup.

Verifies that backups can be opened

Arcserve ImageManager automatically verifies and consolidates backup images and replicates them to a local disk, a remote server or the cloud. With Arcserve Cloud Cyber Resilient Storage, an immutable cloud copy of the backups can also be kept.

StorageCraft with Unna

ShadowProtect and ImageManager are designed for service providers that manage backups on behalf of their customers. That is how we work too: after installation, monitoring the backups stays with us.

  1. We listen first. Together we determine your servers, how long each can be down and how much data loss each can tolerate.
  2. We plan together. We design the backup frequency, retention period and where the local and off-site copies will be kept.
  3. We install and test. We take the first backup and, by booting the system from the backup with VirtualBoot, show you that recovery works.
  4. We stay by your side. We monitor failed jobs and verification results, run regular restore tests and keep track of storage capacity.

Part of the whole

  • On the disaster recovery page, we explain the difference between fast restore and replication.
  • For systems whose downtime must be limited to minutes, we set up real-time replication with OpenText Availability.
  • UnnaBulut provides a target in our data centre in Turkey for the off-site copy of your backups.
  • In Hyper-V environments, we design the backup setup together with the virtualisation project.
  • Endpoint security tries to stop ransomware; ShadowProtect provides the way back when it cannot be stopped.

Frequently asked questions

Will our old ShadowProtect licence remain valid?

ShadowProtect continues to be developed and supported. We review your current version and licence status and decide together on the upgrade or renewal path.

How is it different from Veeam?

Both take image-based backups. ShadowProtect offers straightforward management in smaller, mainly physical-server environments. In large virtualised environments, Veeam is often the better fit; we choose according to your environment.
