Pay for support, not for features

A large share of the virtualisation budget often goes not on hardware but on hypervisor licences. And when the licensing model changes, the budget is suddenly reopened. Many businesses are now asking whether they can do the same job at a more predictable cost.

Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualisation platform licensed under the GNU AGPLv3. All features can be used free of charge; a subscription is optional and provides the enterprise update repository and vendor support.

What does Proxmox VE do?

Runs virtual machines and containers side by side

Windows and Linux virtual machines with KVM, and lightweight Linux containers with LXC, are managed on the same platform from the same web interface. You do not need to dedicate a full virtual machine to a small internal application.

Builds a cluster with no central server

Clustering comes built in. Every server in the cluster can carry out all management tasks; there is no separate management server, and therefore no single point of failure. High availability and live migration are included.

Moves storage inside the servers

Ceph is integrated with Proxmox VE and managed directly from the cluster servers. A hyper-converged setup can be built without an external storage unit. ZFS is also supported for single-server installations.

Handles backup within its own ecosystem

Proxmox Backup Server backs up virtual machines and containers incrementally and with deduplication, and offers encryption and integrity verification. It connects directly to the Proxmox VE interface.

Makes migrating from VMware easier

The built-in import wizard can be used to bring virtual machines running on VMware ESXi into Proxmox VE.

Proxmox VE with Unna

No licence fee does not mean no maintenance. Proxmox owes its success to the right hardware, the right network and regular maintenance.

  1. We listen first. We assess your existing virtual machines, your application requirements and your team’s Linux experience.
  2. We plan together. We determine the cluster size, the choice between Ceph and external storage, network separation and the subscription level.
  3. We build and migrate. We set up the cluster, migrate virtual machines starting with the non-critical ones, and keep a way back open at every step.
  4. We stay by your side. We regularly monitor updates, Ceph health and backup jobs.

Part of the whole

  • On our virtualisation page, we assess Proxmox alongside the other platforms.
  • If your existing investment is large, we also put the cost of staying on VMware on the same table.
  • We design your backup strategy with Proxmox Backup Server or with your existing backup software.
  • UnnaBulut provides a target for the off-site copy of your backups.
  • With network and server monitoring, we spot bottlenecks on the cluster servers early.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used in production without a subscription?

Technically, yes; all features work without a subscription. For production environments, however, we recommend a subscription for the enterprise update repository and vendor support. Subscriptions are priced per physical CPU socket.

Can we back it up with Veeam?

Veeam offers support for Proxmox VE. We check version compatibility during the project phase.

How many servers does Ceph need?

For Ceph to run reliably, at least three servers and a separate storage network are generally recommended. For smaller setups, we assess other storage options.
